Only strangers to The Cupcake Cafe bother to write negative comments. If you mostly "get it" and appreciate The Cupcake, let them know either here or in person. It's one of the rare bakeries and coffee houses that hasn't become a bland Manhattan business. People in the neighborhood and around the world who find The Cupcake by luck or through friends count on them as a second home. The excellent coffee, pies, coffee cakes and yes, beautiful buttercream cakes and cupcakes are only part of the story that reflect this place's heart and delightfully complicated soul.

If you expect your coffee to be done in sixty seconds and served with a big fake smile, this isn't the place for you. But if you can look past the unrefined decor and the slightly oddball crowd you'll end up with one of the best cups of coffee in New York. The lattes taste like real coffee, not just a cup of lukewarm milk-foam that you get from most cafes. Even their decaf is delicious. The cupcakes are fantastic, they always have baked goods and cookies at the front counter, and if you're nice the "grumpy" old man will give you an extra large piece of pie. So no, this place is definitely no Starbucks, but if you'd rather go there you probably don't care about good coffee anyways.

I recently moved to the neighborhood and saw the Cup Cake Cafe (at 545 9th Ave., in Hell's Kitchen) as I was walking by. The name sounded fun and the place looked so earthy and relaxing. My first thought was...this could be a great place to become a regular. Well, that ended immediately. The man at the coffee bar (hopefully not the owner) was completely rude and had an angry attitude. He's an obese, older man with a white beard. He doesn't look at you...he glares at you! When I walked up to the counter, he said, "Do you want food?" I said, no, that I want coffee. He said rudely, "You'll have to wait...I'm busy." I guess he has time to get me food, but not time to get me coffee. He then proceeded to make a couple of specialty coffees for someone. When he finished, I asked him if there was a price list (since no menu or price list was visible). He again asked rudely, "For what?" I explained that I wanted to know what the different coffees cost. His answer was "$1.50 to $5.00." Great...so I know the price RANGE, but I have to guess at specific prices. I said that I'll just take a small decaf coffee...to go. He reached for a cardboard cup and dropped it on the floor, but then picked it up and still used it. I should have asked for a different cup, but I didn't want any more confrontational attitude. Anyway, he made the coffee and was completely hostile the entire time...as well as with other customers. I've passed by there several times since that day, and he always has that same nasty glare. I don't understand how that place stays in business. Naturally, I won't go back.

I purchased a birthday cake for my mother here, to be picked up at 8:30 on a Saturday morning. The cake was ready and absolutely beautiful! I wanted something special for her, and this did not disappoint. Every party guest oohed and ached. In addition, the cake (which we ate the next day) was delicious. The vanilla cake was moist and dense, almost like a pound cake, and flavorful to boot. The vanilla buttercream was light and delicious. In addition, I wanted to note that I carried the cake on a bus to NJ. I read some people had trouble keeping the cake smudge-free in their travels, but I had no problems whatsoever, even though I was managing a heavy overnight bag in the snow. If you're careful, I'm sure you can do the same. This place is truly special, and I will be back in the future.
