With it being listed as one of the Essential bakeries on the Eater list of bakeries in SF I came with quite an expectation but the place let me down in multiple ways. The menu had little variety and the items were hardly interesting. The pastry we had was also not that great. And for the price they charge the portion sizes are ridiculously small. Skip this place if you are looking for a hearty breakfast or brunch.

Really cute spot, with a lot of tasty treats. They also serve Blue Bottle coffee, so I had it here for the first time. I was here for a baby shower, and the staff was really nice and professional. They also made a ton of delicious customized dumplings, bread, deviled eggs, pastries, and more. This is a great venue to host a mini-party. Bring in the booze, let them make the food, and sit back and relax. I hope to visit this spot on another occasion!

One of my favorite places to take out-of-town guests. Totally unique. Wonderful people doing something authentic.

20th Century Cafe is an incredible local Eastern European style cafe, bakery and brunch spot. Love it for delicious desserts, great friendly service and authentic ambience. This is our favorite brunch place in Hayes Valley. In-house baked bagels are one of a kind. The owner works next to her staff and you get to know her and the story of the place as you visit over time. She donates parts of the proceeds from alcoholic beverages to good causes. Every Saturday there is life music. A truly local warm and communal experience, which is hard to come by these days in large cities.

This place reminds me of what old San Francisco would feel like. No techies in sight and I imagine everyone else to be a writer/author or artist of some medium. A friendly but stern charm comes across from who I can only assume is the owner. The coffee is good but the Russian tea Cake is even better. Grab a slice, or two.
